All Issues Get Lean B12 is the most chemically complex of all the vitamins. The structure of B12 is based on a corrin ring, which is similar to the porphyrin ring found in heme. The central metal ion is cobalt. Four of the six coordination sites are provided by the corrin ring, and a fifth by a dimethylbenzimidazole group. The sixth coordination site, the reactive center, is variable, being a cyano group (–CN), a hydroxyl group (–OH), a methyl group (–CH3) or a 5′-deoxyadenosyl group (here the C5′ atom of the deoxyribose forms the covalent bond with cobalt respectively, to yield the four vitamers (forms) of B12. Historically, the covalent C-Co bond is one of the first examples of carbon-metal bonds to be discovered in biology. The hydrogenases and, by necessity, enzymes associated with cobalt utilization, involve metal-carbon bonds.[13]

A B-12 deficiency can arise for reasons as simple as eating a vegetarian diet – since plant foods do not contain B-12 – or as complex as an autoimmune disease that prevents B-12 absorption. Long-term use of acid-inhibiting medications can reduce levels of intrinsic factor, which negatively affects B-12 absorption.

Get Started Today hidevte Scientific Advisory Board 9–13 years 34.0 The stability of vitamin C in topical solutions is a concern, as exposures to air, heat, and/or light may slowly degrade vitamin C. Although the natural form of vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is the most effective for topical administration (11), it is the least stable in solution. However, stable synthetic derivatives, such as ascorbate phosphate, are considered to have limited permeability (11) and function in skin (13, 14). Another stable lipid-soluble derivative, ascorbyl palmitate, also has limited absorption (11), and one in vitro study with cultured skin cells found that the administration of ascorbyl palmitate had some toxic effects (15). Yet, the stability of topical vitamin C solutions may be increased by the addition of other antioxidant compounds (16-19).

Compared to other vitamins, we don’t need a very large amount of vitamin B12 — but we do need to replenish our supply just about every single day. B vitamins are water-soluble and flushed out of the body somewhat easily, so to maintain levels of the recommended amount within our bloodstream and prevent a vitamin B12 deficiency, we need to eat food sources of B vitamins often.

Children’s Health Hi – my father in law was diagnosed with a sever vitamin B12 deficiency. His symptoms now mainly consist of balancing/staggering problems (difficulty walking) and mild weakness. Two Drs. have said the damage has already been done and he will never fully recover. He will need to take an injectable vitamin B12 for the rest of his life and he will always need assistance walking. Is there any treatment other than vitamin B12 shots which can help to reverse the symptoms so he will be able to walk on his own again?

Emily Skye Clapped Back at Haters Who Said Pregnancy Would ‘Ruin’ Her Body Some researchers have found an association between Alzheimer’s disease and deficiencies of vitamin B12 and folic acid; however, other researchers consider such deficiencies to be of only minor importance. In a study of elderly Canadians, those with low blood levels of folate were more likely to have dementia of all types, including Alzheimer’s disease, than those with higher levels of folate. Little is known about whether supplementation with either vitamin would significantly help people with this disease. Nonetheless, it makes sense for people with Alzheimer’s disease to be medically tested for vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies and to be treated if they are deficient.
