Hallelujah Acres Diet Most people do not have a problem obtaining the RDA of 2.4 μg/day of vitamin B12 in food. According to a US national survey, the average dietary intake of vitamin B12 is 5.4 μg/day for adult men and 3.4 μg/day for adult women. Adults over the age of 60 had an average dietary intake of 4.8 μg/day (42). However, consumption of any type of vegetarian diet dramatically increases the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in individuals across all age groups (82). Some foods with substantial amounts of vitamin B12 are listed in Table 2, along with their vitamin B12 content in micrograms (μg). For more information on the nutrient content of specific foods, search the USDA food composition database.
Reactive oxygen species are harmful in other ways as well—they contribute to the DNA damage that is the first step in converting healthy cells into malignant cancers54,55 and they impair many of the checks and balances inherent in our immune systems, rendering us potentially vulnerable to deadly infections and their consequences.56,57 Finally, healthy lifestyle choices such as exercise17,18 and unhealthy activities such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption14,24,58 produce reactive oxygen species that must be controlled to prevent tissue injury. Scientists studying all of these conditions are rapidly developing a strong appreciation for vitamin C’s powerful potential as a preventive and often therapeutic supplement.
Hitting the gym hard hoping to make strength gains? Researchers at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, took 19 men performing resistance training over a 10-week period and gave some of them 14 grams of whey and casein protein along with 6 grams of free amino acids, while giving the rest a 20-gram placebo. Those who consumed the whey had greater increases in fat-free mass and muscle strength. The key is to follow the example of the study and consume whey one hour before and after the exercises.

In food preservation: Chemical preservation Protein, highly complex substance that is present in all living organisms. Proteins are of great nutritional value and are directly involved in the chemical processes essential for life. The importance of proteins was recognized by chemists in the early 19th century, including Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius, who in 1838 coined the term protein, a word derived from the Greek proteios, meaning “holding first place.” Proteins are species-specific; that is, the proteins of one species differ from those of another species. They are also organ-specific; for instance, within a single organism, muscle proteins differ from those of the brain and liver.
They’re getting desperate now; it’s hilarious to watch everything unravel.
Subclinical deficiency is still incompletely understood. It is often not differentiated from clinical deficiency or is assumed to be its prodrome despite rarely displaying IF-related malabsorption, the proven basis for 94% of clinical deficiency. The causes of subclinical deficiency remain largely unknown: diet is usually adequate,57–59 and FBCM was found in only 30% to 50% of cases.9,11,27,36,59 Neither its prognosis nor the health benefits of cobalamin therapy beyond biochemical normalization underwent prospective controlled study.43 However, the course of subclinical deficiency often appears stationary.61–63 The biochemical abnormalities themselves frequently fluctuate64,65; mildly to moderately elevated MMA levels improved spontaneously in 44% of 432 cases retested 1 to 4 years later, and only 16% worsened.64 Those observations notwithstanding, the impulse for medical intervention is such that controlled cobalamin trials in subclinical deficiency have been called unethical by some investigators.42

Since 2010 the USDA has recommended that adults over 18 eat 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily, which works out to roughly 55 grams of protein for a 150-pound person. But that amount may be too low for most active people, according to a 2015 study by a team of researchers in Canada and Texas, published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism. Studies examining the effects of vitamin C intake on the risk of Alzheimer’s disease have reached conflicting conclusions. Maintaining a healthy dietary intake is probably more important than supplementation for achieving any potential benefit. A 2010 review found no role for vitamin C supplementation in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin C supplementation does not prevent or slow the progression of age-related cataract.
